Red Alert!

close-up image of a red fire alarm light

Having been through several fire drills and real alarms (that turned out to be minor in the end) over the past few years that I've worked on the 16th floor of my building, I've come to appreciate the pain and suffering this little device can cause with or without a fire. The bight, flashing strobe light it produces is enough to blind most insects, animals and humans within a half mile radius. And just in case you thought you'd find your way out of the fire with your sense of hearing instead (since this thing had blinded you), it emits a sweeping sine wave that covers all human tone perception ranges at full volume...making sure that you can't hear any sound at any wavelength by the time it's done. This thing is a technological wonder. You will undoubtedly know there is a fire when this thing goes off...but you won't under any circumstances have enough wits left about you to escape it.
